Global demand for biodiesel is increasing rapidly due to international energy and environmental policies. Biodiesel is a renewable fuel which can either be used as an alternative or extender to petroleum diesel and has tremendous environmental benefits. The transesterification process removes and breaks larger and more viscous vegetable oil molecules that do not combust well in modern diesel engines. Although claims have been made to use straight vegetable oils in diesel engines, biodiesel is an entirely different product.
